5 Tips to Reduce Communication Costs in Mold Manufacturing

In my recent experience working with European clients, I’ve noticed that clear communication at the start of a project saves significant time. Here are 5 practical tips to ensure your mold projects starts smoothly.

1. Prepare Complete Technical Files(3D + 2D)

Always provide 3D drawings(e.g., STEP OR IGS files) of your plastic product. Relying solely on 2D drawings often makes it impossible for the supplier to provide an accurate quote, leading to unnecessary back-and-forth. While 2D drawings are helpful for tolerances, 3D files are essential. Remember, most mold factories offer design services and can design the mold structure based on your product data.

2. Share Injection Machine Specifications

Inform the manufacturer about the Injection molding machine you plan to use. Specifically, mention the clamping force(tonnage) and the brand. This ensures the mold is designed to fit your specific equipment perfectly.

3.Define Material ,Cavitation, and Mold Life

  • Product Material: If you are have a specific plastic in mind, let them know. If you are launching a new product without prior experience, ask the factory for recommendations. While they can suggest materials to balance quality and costs, the final decision rests with you.
  • Mold Steel & Life:If you aren’t sure which mold steel to use, the factory can choose the most suitable grade base on your requirements. Simply provide the expected mold life(total cycles) and the number of cavities(how many parts per shot).

4. Respect Time Zones and Holidays

When working with the suppliers in China or other countries, keep their holiday schedules in mind. During public holidays, production might stop, though services like quoting and design may continue at a slower pace.

  • Standard China Working Hours: 09:00-12:00 and 13:30-18:00(GMT+8)
  • Some companies work overtime until 20:00. For urgent matters, please try to call during these standard windows.

5. Ensure Email Deliverability

Make sure to add your supplier’s email address to your contacts or whilelist. Mold manufacturing involves large files and technical attachments which can sometimes be blocked or flagged as spam by corporate firewalls.  Double-check your settings to ensure you don’t miss critical updates.
